Conservatives outline Surrey’s transport vision for the coming year 16th February 2006
Surrey County Council’s Conservative controlled Executive this week outlined Surrey’s transport vision for the coming year as the government awarded the county a 5.2% increase in funding to reflect the council’s status as one of the best transport authorities in the country.
The government has confirmed that Surrey’s Local Transport Plan (LTP) allocation for 2006/2007 will be £25.935million, with £13.959 million being spent on road maintenance projects, and £11.976 million on other transport schemes. This allocation, combined with the additional investment proposed by the Leader, Nick Skellett, in his budget last week, will bring the total level of spending on transport in Surrey to an unprecedented £35m for the coming year.
Many of the schemes which will benefit from this increased investment include tackling congestion, improving road safety, making environmental improvements and improving the road network in Surrey, as well as specific projects such as Safe Routes to Schools and the provision of 14 vehicle actuated signs around the county.
Conservatives have also ensured that some of this money will be managed locally through Surrey’s Local Committees, who will each look at proposals as to how this should be spent when they next meet. A total of £5.41m has been allocated as follows:
Epsom and Ewell £390,000
Runnymede £400,000
Spelthorne £420,000
Surrey Heath £440,000
Woking £440,000
Mole Valley £500,000
Tandridge £520,000
Elmbridge £520,000
Reigate & Banstead £560,000
Waverley £600,000
Guildford £620,000
Commenting Helyn Clack, Conservative Transportation Spokesperson, said:
“ I’m delighted that Conservative run Surrey is now acknowledged as one of the best transportation services in the country, and the government have recognised the fact by giving us a much deserved increase in our LTP allocation for the coming year. This increase, combined with the additional investment agreed in the budget, now means we are spending record levels on Surrey’s transport network. “
