SCC councillors unanimously back Surrey Conservatives over the future of the Highways Contract 29th November

At the Surrey County Council meeting on Tuesday 28th November, members of all parties supported a motion by David Harmer (Waverley Western Villages) in commending the decisions taken by the Executive in seeking improvements in the way Surrey’s roads are maintained and the service provided to Surrey residents.

During the debate on the motion members were reminded that the Leader, Nick Skellett, and the Executive Member for Transport, Helyn Clack, had been working hard to secure a better deal for the people of Surrey, both from the contractors and from central government and the Department for Transport.

Comments were also made by both Mr. Harmer and Mrs. Clack regarding government funding, and the failure of the Department for Transport to recognise that the ‘wear and tear’ on Surrey’s roads is greater in a county that has 20% more cars than the average, and also 20% fewer roads than the average.

Earlier in the day it had been pointed out that when Surrey’s Motorways are congested drivers will find alternative routes, and this also increases the traffic on, and damage to, those roads for which Surrey is responsible. This is something that goes unrecognised by government.

Speaking afterwards Mr. Skellett remarked “it is good to see the Council agreeing unanimously that we as an Executive are taking the correct decisions and I know that Helyn Clack in particular has been doing sterling work in moving us forward from the position we were in previously”.

Mr. Skellett remarked that there was a ‘consensus’ on the direction being taken by the Executive, and all of those present voted in favour of the resolution.
