SCC Conservatives condemn Government cuts to Surrey’s Adult Social Care funding 11th January

SCC’s first Cabinet Meeting of the year on Tuesday 2nd January heard the unwelcome news that the Government has decided to cut back on most of its direct grants for Adult Social Services for 2007/08, including one for personal Carers.

Sally Marks (Caterham Valley) Executive Member for Adult Social Services said, “This Labour Government is giving a very grim New Year message to many of Surrey’s residents who care for their relatives on a long-term basis. It is a bitter pill for our patient long-suffering Carers to hear that Carers grants will be cut. SCC will continue to do all it can to support Surrey’s Carers, but it does not help when the Government makes real-terms cuts in funding.

Without Surrey’s Carers, many of Surrey’s vulnerable adults would be unable to continue to live at home – they provide a vital service and it is a shame that the Government does not appear to recognise this”.

Mrs. Marks will be writing to the Secretaries of State for Health and Local Government to ask them to review their decision to cut funding for Adult Social Care in Surrey
